Turmeric Brown Rice

Turmeric brown rice is a healthy, golden-hued side dish and can be made by simply adding turmeric powder when making long grain brown rice. Of course, you can also dress it up by adding your desired combination of garlic, onion, ginger, cumin and by using broth instead of water. It offers an earthy flavor and pairs well with curries, pulses, or non-starchy vegetables.

Method 1: Instant Pot

  1. Rinse 1 cup long grain brown rice to remove excess starch. 
  2. Combine with 1 1/4 cups water in an Instant Pot.
  3. Add 1 tsp turmeric powder and any other ingredients you may want to try (see above).
  4. Pressure cook for 20 minutes. 
  5. Allow Instant Pot to release pressure naturally (about 10 minutes). 
  6. Fluff with a fork and serve.

Method 2: Stovetop

  1. Rinse 1 cup long grain brown rice to remove excess starch.
  2. Combine rice with 2 cups water in a saucepan.
  3. Add 1 tsp turmeric powder and any other ingredients you may want to try (see above).
  4. Bring to boil, then cover and reduce heat to low and simmer for 35-40 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and let it sit for 5-10 minutes before serving. 
  6. Fluff with a fork and serve.

Notes

  • Keep the same water-to-rice proportions when making larger batches.
